Ait Sgougou (Beni Mrirt) Ivory Cellular Rug with Blush Channels

Ait Sgougou (Beni Mrirt) Ivory Cellular Rug with Blush Channels

A contemporary Ait Sgougou rug in which an irregular network of raised ivory pile cells is set against recessed channels of blush clay, creating a composition of remarkable texture, rhythm, and quiet colour.

Hand-knotted in the Ait Sgougou weaving tradition of the Middle Atlas, also known as Beni Mrirt, this piece presents a field of plump, softly rounded cells of deep ivory wool. The cells vary in size and outline, larger and more open toward the foot of the rug and finer and more compact toward the head, and are separated by narrow channels that run continuously across the surface like the seams of a dry-laid pavement.

The channels are worked in a low, flat blush clay ground, so the pattern is drawn by contrast of both height and tone. A fine thread of ochre appears in the channels toward the upper end, adding a subtle, unexpected note to an otherwise restrained palette. The dense, lofty pile of the cells and the flat, ridged texture of the ground establish a tactile dialogue characteristic of accomplished hand craftsmanship.

Generous in scale and soft in palette, the rug lends warmth and acoustic softness to contemporary interiors while preserving an unmistakably artisanal character. It works equally as a quiet architectural foundation for a living space or as a collectible textile within a carefully curated room.

Styling Notes

This Ait Sgougou rug pairs naturally with interiors centred on limewashed plaster, tadelakt, travertine, terracotta, oak, walnut, linen, and hand-crafted ceramics. Its ivory and blush palette provides gentle visual structure while maintaining a calm atmosphere, making it particularly suited to minimalist, Mediterranean, Japandi, and gallery-inspired spaces where materiality takes precedence over ornament.

A contemporary Ait Sgougou weaving where an organic network of ivory cells is held by blush channels, in a composition of texture, proportion, and quiet architectural refinement.
