Collection: High Atlas – Azilal Rugs

High Atlas — Azilal Rugs

From the central High Atlas, Azilal rugs are the atelier of improvisation: creamy undyed grounds animated by chromatic glyphs, zigzags, lozenges, and playful asymmetries. Hand-knotted in supple wool—often with cotton highlights—these pieces translate Amazigh symbolism into contemporary, artful compositions.

Expect lively color pops, graphic spontaneity, and a soft, medium pile that reads sculptural yet versatile—editorial statements for living rooms, bedrooms, and gallery-style spaces.

Woven by High Atlas weavers in and around Azilal province. Dense wool pile is tied over wool or cotton foundations; relaxed fringes and selvedges register the maker’s cadence and regional grammar.

Key Attributes

  • Weave: Hand-knotted pile; soft, medium height with a pliant, cushioned handle. Occasional mixed techniques (tuft, flat-weave bands).
  • Origin: High Atlas (Azilal & surrounding valleys), Morocco.
  • Materials: Sheep’s wool pile; wool or cotton warp/weft depending on workshop and era; occasional cotton color accents.
  • Design Vocabulary: Diamonds/lozenges, zigzags, stepped lattices, protective bands, and playful micro-motifs; intuitive asymmetry and negative space.
  • Palette: Ivory/cream grounds with inky charcoals and vibrant accents—pomegranate, saffron, lapis, emerald—plus organic abrash from artisanal dye lots.
  • Applications: Statement floor rugs, nursery-friendly softness, and art-forward wall hangings; pairs well with modern, Scandinavian, and eclectic interiors.

Curated Authenticity

Individually vetted by Atelier des Atlas with lineage notes and maker provenance where available.

Care: Vacuum on low with brush off; rotate periodically; blot spills immediately; spot clean with wool-safe solution after testing for colorfastness; professional wash recommended.

One-of-a-kind: Variations in pile height, abrash, and fringe/selvage finishing are intrinsic to Azilal craftsmanship.
